circles Introduction

Friesland is a beautiful province in northern Netherlands with plenty of water and nature. Leeuwarden is the capital of Friesland since 1500. You can feel the history throughout the city, especially when taking a guided tour. Leeuwarden is also the birthplace of the notorious spy Mata Hari. One of the distinctive features of Leeuwarden is the Oldehove, which is our own tower of Pisa. Even though it is only 40 m high, you can climb this tower and look over the city center of Leeuwarden.

In the middle of the city, we also have the Prinsentuin, which is a big green park. If you want to feel in touch with the nature, but stay in the city, this is the place to be. Leeuwarden is the cultural capital of Europe and therefore there are also plenty of things to do and see in the Prinsentuin, which was especially created for the cultural capital 2018.

The Prinsetuin is not the only park in Leeuwarden, we also have the Groene Ster, where you can also swim if the weather is nice. Moreover, at bit farther than the Groene Ster, we also have a zoo. AquaZoo, where a lof of animals walk around freely, such as kangaroos or penguins. Finally, we also have the Alde Feanen, which is a national park a bit outside of Leeuwarden.

Friesland and Leeuwarden are known for being the host of the 11-city tour. When the winters were cold, there was a iceskating competition of 200km through 11 cities in Friesland. Unfortunately, we haven’t had cold winters for a long time, but we created different kinds of 11-city tours. For instance, on a bike, with a motorcycle, rowing or paddling.

Leeuwarden is a city plenty of live, activities and festivals during the period of spring and summer. Activities as Paddle or festivals as Straatfestival are one of the most intresting ones.
